TRINIDAD & TOBAGO MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

"The Trinidad & Tobago Medical Association is gravely concerned with what is happening  in the South West Regional Health Authority.

The loss of life of any patient is a sad and traumatic event and this is even more so with a maternal death. The T&TMA would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ramsoomair family.

We do agree that the circumstances surrounding this episode need to be fully investigated and remedial action should be implemented so that a disaster of this nature should never recur.

Action needs to be taken, but we do not support the suspension of the medical  and nursing staff, without conducting a full investigation . This is improper and counterproductive on many fronts. The stigma of implied guilt without evidence is against natural justice and procedure. This move has also compromised Obstetric and Gynaecological care in San Fernando General Hospital because the staff shortage has now been worsened.

We  would like this matter to be dealt with expeditiously. At the end of the process we would like not only the  Public but also the Medical and Nursing Personnel to be confident in the Health Service."
